A WhatsApp group for your wedding photos
It's free, everyone's already in it, and it takes two minutes to set up. It is genuinely the best free option going — right up until you look at the photos properly.
The short answer
WhatsApp compresses every photo sent the normal way. It resizes the image and re-encodes it as a smaller JPEG, typically shedding 80–90% of the file. On a phone screen at the reception it looks fine. Printed, or opened on a laptop a year later, it doesn't. There is a way around it — attach the photo as a document rather than a photo, which keeps the original — but you would need all 130 guests to know that and do it, every time, after two drinks.
What a WhatsApp group does well
- It's free and it's instant. No purchase, no setup fee, no waiting on anything.
- Everyone watches it fill up. This is the thing we genuinely don't do. Photos landing in a group all night is its own entertainment, and people take more photos because others are watching.
- Nothing new to learn. Your guests have used WhatsApp every day for years. There is no smaller ask than "send it to the group".
- It travels. For a guest list spread across countries, WhatsApp is the one app everyone genuinely has.
If your guest list is small, close, and all on WhatsApp already, make the group. We'd rather tell you that than sell you something you didn't need.
Where it falls over at a wedding
- The photos are already damaged. This is the one that can't be undone later. You can retrieve a photo from a chat a year from now; you cannot get back the detail WhatsApp threw away when it was sent.
- Everyone gets everyone's phone number. A wedding is the one party where half the room are strangers to the other half. Putting 130 people in a group hands every number to every guest, and it stays that way long after the wedding.
- Someone has to build the group. Adding 130 contacts is a job, and it's a job that lands on the couple or a bridesmaid in the week before the wedding.
- Afterwards it's a chat, not an album. The photos are interleaved with 400 messages. Getting them out means scrolling and saving one at a time, and the group keeps going — you'll be muting it by Tuesday.

So which one
Make the group if…
- It's a smaller wedding where people already know each other.
- Everyone's on WhatsApp — common outside the US, less so inside it.
- You want guests to see the photos rolling in during the night.
- Phone-screen quality is good enough for you.
Use us if…
- You want the photos at full resolution, because you might print one.
- You'd rather not hand 130 strangers each other's phone numbers.
- You don't want to build a group, or chase people afterwards.
- You want one gallery and one download, not a year-long chat.
Where we're worse
- We cost $59. A group chat costs nothing, and no feature list changes that.
- Guests can't see the photos come in. Your album is private, which is the point — but it does mean you lose the shared-feed fun that makes a group chat good. Some couples run both for exactly that reason.
- 1,000 photos, and the gallery comes down after 1 year. We tell you before it does and you can download everything as a ZIP — but a chat has no such deadline.
